Interview With David Akinsanya
Advocacy for young people
I first met David over 40 years ago when I was taking my first tentative steps into social work as a project worker with the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NACRO). It was around 1983, and David had just been released from Borstal.
David quickly became a central figure in the project, supporting and mentoring ex-offenders who came to improve their reading and writing skills. He also played an important role in numerous community initiatives in and around Basildon, Essex.
Over the years, David went on to become a powerful advocate for improving the lives of people in care, working as a broadcaster, documentary maker and policy adviser. Today, he lives on a canal boat with his wonderful son and continues to contribute to community projects that make a real difference and reflect the values at the heart of social work.
