Welcome to the world of social work, a field brimming with challenges, profound experiences, and rewarding career paths. We’re Debbie Amas and Kheya Patel, two social work professionals at opposite ends of our careers, embarking on an exciting venture to bridge the gap between the past and present realities of social work.
The idea for our podcast sparked over a casual lunch conversation where we shared our experiences and challenges in the field. We pondered how social work has changed over the years, if indeed it has, and how these changes impact professionals at various stages of their careers. We want to address the common concerns like burnout, which both of us have faced, and discuss sustaining a career in social work through challenging times.
Broadening Social Work Horizons
Often, social work can seem limited to statutory roles in child and adult protection. However, the reality is far broader, with myriad possibilities like academic roles and community-focused work. We aim to spotlight the diversity within social work and showcase the rewarding nature of helping individuals to achieve their milestones.
Challenging Stigmas
A significant part of our podcast is dedicated to demystifying social work, tackling the stigma around it, and promoting a better understanding of the profession.
Introducing Learning Pods and Cultural Connect
In our quest to enrich the learning journey of social work professionals, we’re introducing ‘learning pods’ in our episodes. Inspired by a concept where professionals crunch social work papers, making them accessible and engaging for everyone.
Moreover, our Cultural Connect segments will delve into the essential topics of cultural diversity and religion in social work. Coming from diverse backgrounds, we acknowledge the critical role culture plays in social work interventions and aim to foster a deeper understanding and sensitivity towards cultural differences.
Interviews and Perspectives
We’re looking forward to featuring interviews with lived experienced individuals, professionals, and academics from various backgrounds. Hearing directly from these voices will offer insights into the realities of social work and the diverse perspectives within the field.
